Nothing is what it is unless we agree on what it is. So is it…valuable?

This story is about me contemplating the different aspects of value. Why you ask? The war in Europe is one, crypto is another or maybe i’m close to a midlife crisis. I will let you decide.

Now you could say there is more than one definition of value and you are right.

So let’s name a couple:

  • Monetary value
  • Emotional value
    Relatives or objects with memories
  • Intrinsic value
  • Numeric value
  • A principle or quality
    Democracy vs communism

Now in my pondering about value I was asking myself is there a formula for defining value.

V(Value) = E(Energy) + S(Scarcity) + C(Consensus)

Translated for the crypto enthusiasts:
V = Energy(Bitcoin) + Scarcity(NFT’s) + Consensus(Staking/DAO)

For the normal world:
V = Energy(Labor) + Scarcity(Skill set) + Consensus(Supply and demand)

Now the other day a college send me the “Line Goes Up” video from
Folding Ideas
.

Basically it’s a 2 hour long rent about everything that’s wrong with crypto and in particular NFT’s. So for part 2 of this article it’s beneficial to watch it……go on i’ll wait.

You made it. Take a break get some coffee and find an excuse for your boss where 2 hours of your time went.

Now Dan Olsen makes good points on why capitalism and democracy……uhh I meant NFT’s and crypto are problematic.

Tokens are good for assigning monetary value to anything and everything.

And he’s right where currently heading towards a world with micro transactions everywhere and he’s not liking what he believes that will lead to; and rightfully so.

Maybe China will create a digital coin linked to your social score that is based on how good you are in following the rules China created for their citizens.

Not a concept that I look forward to seeing in practice.

So how can we make sure the new system we are creating is not worse than the system we have?

What is your value according to:

  • Your neighbor
  • Society
  • The world
  • Your religion
  • Yourself

And what system handles value in a way that it will lead to a better life for humanity.

This article got out of hands fast, with bigger questions then one post can handle..Anyways.

How do we assign value that leads to a BAYC(Bored Ape Yacht Club) image being worth more than a regular home; yet when a human live is lost in war Poetin is paying 60.000 dollar to the family of the fallen soldier.

It seems nowadays we cannot agree on the value of basic things anymore.

It feels to me that the Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens applies.
A battle between good and evil.

Now I bet you’re waiting on a conclusion to this post but really there is none only Mother Teresa. Because when we are unsure on what value to assign we go back to what our mothers have taught us.

Mother Teresa

“Even the rich are hungry for love, for being cared for, for being wanted, for having someone to call their own.”

“Peace and war start within one’s own home. If we really want peace for the world, let us start by loving one another within our families. Sometimes it is hard for us to smile at one another.”

“What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight; build it anyway.”

“I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.”
